Overview
1. What’s changing about @cal?
We’re switching to a different login system, called CalNet, created by UC Berkeley. You may remember CalNet — students have been using it on campus since the late 1990s to check grades and financial aid information, and to change classes. If you haven't already, register now.
2. Can I log in with the @cal user name I used before this change?
No, your old user name and password won’t be recognized by the new, CalNet system. However, after you register with CalNet, you will be assigned an automatically generated CalNet ID which you can then personalize, using your old user name if you like (as long as it meets the CalNet ID requirements, explained below).
3. What do I do after I’ve filled in the registration form?
Click the Register button at the bottom of the form. This takes you to the Policy Agreement screen, where you see your new CalNet ID and the @cal Policies. Your CalNet ID will be in the format "cads12345." The prefix "cads" is required; the "12345" is a 5-digit number that CalNet assigns to you.
4. Why are we switching to a new login system?
The new system makes it easier to use @cal because, once you’ve logged in, you can navigate smoothly between programs and services (even ones hosted by different vendors) without being asked to log in again.
5. Do I have to register in the new login system?
Yes, you need to register in CalNet, as do all current users of @cal, so that we can verify your identity and protect the security of your account.
6. I'm already a member of @cal. Is my CalNet ID related to the beginning of my @cal email forwarding account?
No, there’s no relationship between your CalNet ID and your email forwarding address. You will continue to manage your email forwarding account.
7. Since we are using CalNet to log in, will I have access to Air Bears, the University's wireless network?
No, unfortunately we can’t offer the wireless service or remote access to library services to @cal members who are visiting or working on campus. However, if you’re an employee of the University, you will continue to have the same access.
8. I'm a University employee. Will this change affect my existing CalNet login?
No, you shouldn’t see any changes in your existing CalNet account. Just remember that, if you make any changes to your account, they will affect you when you log in as both an @cal member and an employee.
1. How do I register in the new login system, CalNet?
Fill out the registration form, and be sure to tell us the information marked with an asterisk (*).
Make a note of your CalNet ID and passphrase; keep it in a secure place for future reference.
On the Policy Agreement screen, you will read and agree to the @cal policies.
2. What is the difference between a PIN and a CalNet ID?
A PIN is only used once during the registration process. After you have successfully registered, you never have to use your PIN.
Your CalNet ID is your username for @cal. Although we assign you a CalNet ID when you register, you can personalize your CalNet ID. Do it now. (Have your current CalNet ID and passphrase handy. You'll need it to get started.) Current students and '08 grads will be able to create a personalized CalNet ID in February 2009.
3. Why must I enter my e-mail address twice?
We ask you to enter it twice so we are sure you’ve entered the correct address. If there is a difference in the two e-mail addresses you enter, we ask you to enter it again, just to make sure we’ve got it right.
4. Why do I need to enter the first 4 digits of my Social Security Number?
We use the first 4 digits of your Social Security Number, along with the other information you enter on the registration form, to verify that you are a legitimate member of the @cal community. This prevents unauthorized people from accessing @cal.
The first four digits of your SSN are not personally identifiable. We don’t have (or need) your whole social security number.
5. What if my registration doesn't work?
If we can't identify you in our database using the information you've entered, our customer service team will send you an e-mail you and help you through the registration process.
6. What is my CalNet ID?
Your CalNet ID is the user name you type to identify yourself to CalNet — the online doorway to UC Berkeley’s information services.
7. Should I write down my CalNet ID?
Yes, it's a good idea to write it down (in private) and keep it in a secure place, so that you can find it later in case you need it.
8. What if I forget my CalNet ID?
If you can't find the note on which you wrote your CalNet ID, you can contact @cal customer service by sending email to: atcal@alumni.berkeley.edu.
9. Can I get a personalized CalNet ID?
Absolutely! Create a personalized CalNet ID. (You may be asked to log in with your current CalNet ID and passphrase.) Please remember, you will not be able to change your personalized CalNet ID after you create it.
*Please Note: Current students and '08 grads will be able to create one in February 2009.
1. What is a passphrase?
A passphrase is a private password for logging into @cal. Your passphrase can be a word, a phrase, or an entire sentence, including spaces, as long as it meets the passphrase requirements. Some ideas for passphrases:
• The mailing address of your childhood home or a favorite vacation spot
• A relative’s name and birthday
• A phrase — with punctuation — that’s meaningful to you
2. What are the passphrase requirements?
Here are the requirements for a passphrase:
-
It must be 9 to 255 characters, including blank spaces.
-
It must contain characters from at least 3 of these groups:
• Uppercase letters (A-Z)
• Lowercase letters (a-z)
• Numbers (0-9)
• Punctuation characters (such as |, $, %, #) -
It must not contain your first, middle, or last names or your CalNet ID.
-
Any time you change your passphrase, you should make sure it’s substantially different from the current and previous passphrases.
3. What if I forgot my passphrase?
No worries! Fill out this form to request it, or contact @cal customer service: atcal@alumni.berkeley.edu.
4. Why must I enter my passphrase twice?
We ask you to enter your passphrase twice so that we can be sure you’ve entered the passphrase you want. If there is a difference in the two passphrases you enter, we ask you to enter it again, just to make sure we’ve got it right.
5. What do I do after I enter my passphrase?
Click the Set Passphrase button. This takes you to a screen where you see your new CalNet ID, have a chance to see your passphrase, and read the @cal Policies.

Creating a Personalized CalNet ID
1. Can I change my CalNet ID from the “cads[12345]” name to something that’s easier to remember?

Follow these steps to create a personalized CalNet ID:
-
Login using your existing CalNet ID, which begins with "cads" and your passphrase.

Enter your passphrase.
-
Click the Set CalNet ID button.
3. What are the CalNet ID requirements?

-
It must contain at least 1 letter (a-z, lowercase only).
-
It must not contain your Cal student ID or your employee ID (if you work for the university).

5. What happens after I set my passphrase?
You have a chance to write down your CalNet ID and passphrase, you read and agree to the @cal policies, and then you can go to @cal services.
Other Questions
1. I have subscriptions to @cal e-mail lists. In the new @cal, will I still get messages through these lists?
The e-mail lists will be replaced by @cal groups by the end of 2008. These groups consist of @cal members who share a common interest — for example, an industry, a sport, a geographical location — much like the e-mail lists. Group members post messages for one another, send group e-mails, and share news online via @cal. To join a group:
-
Go to @cal cafe groups and log in with your CalNet ID and passphrase.
-
You can browse groups, or search groups by clicking the Find button.
-

2. What is an email forwarding address?
You can select a custom Cal email address to use, and give us an email address to forward it to. Go to your email forwarding address now. (If you are a Haas alum, go here.)
